About

BILLY COBHAM' TIME MACHINE

A master of fusion rhythm, Billy Cobham is widely regarded as one of the most influential drummers of his era. Combining jazz complexity and groove with the raw power of rock, he helped define jazz fusion in the early 1970s with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and alongside Miles Davis on the legendary Bitches Brew and A Tribute to Jack Johnson. He is a long-standing favourite of the Montreux Jazz Festival, first taking the stage in 1974, the same year he released his debut album Spectrum. A landmark of jazz, rock and funk fusion, the album features the iconic track "Stratus", later sampled by Massive Attack and reinterpreted on stage by Prince. The Panamanian-American drummer has been based in Switzerland for over forty years, but continues to appear on stages around the world.

MARCUS MILLER
We want Miles!

Composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist, Marcus Miller is one of the most influential musicians of his time. Since the mid-1970s, the bassist has contributed to over 500 albums and collaborated with artists such as Aretha Franklin, George Benson and Al Jarreau—not to mention Miles Davis, for whom he notably wrote and produced the album Tutu. This summer, the bassist celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the legendary trumpeter, who shaped the history of the MJF on numerous occasions. For the occasion, he reunites the band from the live album We Want Miles, recorded in Japan in 1981: Mike Stern on guitar, Bill Evans on saxophone and Mino Cinelu on percussion. Joined by three additional musicians, they will revisit Miles’s repertoire, from the fifties through to the eighties.

« I am really excited to bring this band back together in honour of Miles. We’re going to play the music from all of the important eras of Miles’ career but I’m going to also use these incredible musicians to take Miles into the future and explore some other things that Miles might have appreciated playing going forward. After all, Miles was never one to look back; he has always focused on what lay ahead” – Marcus Miller
